For those mornings I would fall back to just 2- 3 hardboiled eggs, or a single hardboiled egg and a protein shake made with water + whey protein isolate. Since I work from home, I can typically take the time to make a big breakfast, but probably 1/6 days I would have to fall back to the quick breakfast. Remove most dairy products. This wasn’t a huge issue for me. I haven’t drank much milk since junior high, and although I do enjoy cheese on almost everything it was easy enough to give up. Luckily, I could still use butter to cook with, and if you are like the many people that love cream in their coffee – this is okay as well as long as it’s heavy cream and not milk. Cheese is a big part of my cheat days as I explain below. Water, Coffee, or Tea. This was one of the biggest challenges for me. That said it is crazy how fast you can lose weight quickly if you simply cut out drinking unnecessary calories. Admittedly, I’ve historically enjoyed a beer or two over dinner at home – and even more than one or two if out with some friends. Although I don’t think there’s anything wrong with a beer a night, or a glass of wine a night, I know the former is not great for losing weight. If all you have is two weeks to lose weight, you’re going to have to be very strict with this rule. Luckily you can still drink any water- based drink such as coffee and tea, so it’s not all bad. I usually have a huge glass of ice cold water plus one or two large cups of coffee in the morning to kick start my day. I often use cinnamon to flavour my coffee – it’s a great tip for those of you that really enjoyed adding milk. No white carbohydrates. In fact, anything that is white or can be white. So no pastas, no rice, no breads, no oatmeal, no potatoes, etc. However, I still ate a ton of carbohydrates. I just ate better high- fiber carbs such as black beans, kidney beans, and lentils. The latter I didn’t really enjoy, so most of my meals were made up of beans. The picture to the left is an example of what I would eat for supper. This night I had a spread of black beans, cooked frozen veggies, and sliced ham. I basically substituted the ham for any other meat – chicken, beef, or pork mostly – and alternated between black and kidney beans. For lunch, I’ll often take 1/2- 1 can of tuna, 1- 2 cups of frozen veggies, and a big scoop of bean, cook in the microwave, add a couple squeezes of mustard and pepper and shake. Boost the metabolic cost of each exercise: A workout is only as good as the exercises it consists of. To ramp up the metabolic cost of an exercise choose compound movements, lift as fast as possible, and use a load that’s heavy enough to stimulate all your muscle fibers (you can’t go wrong with 6- 1. RM range for fat loss). Boost the metabolic cost of the entire workout: Once you incorporate the above three components to boost the metabolic cost of each exercise, you’re 8. The cool part about not having a target number of reps per set is that you’ll always be doing as much as your body can at that moment – no more, no less. This is the most effective way I’ve found to train for fat loss, and that’s why it’s one of the primary methods I use in Body of F. I. R. E. Two or three of these circuits per week is great for burning fat. Remember to use different exercises in each workout and vary the load. When the load is high the reps per set are low so you need more circuits. When the load is lighter the reps per set are higher so you need fewer rounds. As with everything in life though, there’s always a silver- lining (you didn’t think I’d just leave you there did ya?). The good great news is that visceral fat responds really, really well to exercise and diet. Much better, in fact, than fat on the hips and thighs. Which means that you can get the flat, sexy stomach you’ve always wanted, if you’re willing to put in the effort and do what works. Which leads us nicely to? It’s not that crunches aren’t a good exercise (although there are better exercises, see the workout below) but the main reason is: you can’t spot reduce fat! What this means is that you can’t target a specific area of your body to selectively lose fat. So it doesn’t matter how many crunches, sit- ups or ab- blaster machine reps you do, it won’t give you a flat stomach unless you do some of the other things I’m going to tell you about in a moment. Not only that, but there are far better ab exercises than crunches which you could be doing. It’s all about exercise I wish this were true. Wouldn’t it be great to workout and eat cupcakes, pizza, ice- cream and everything else you wanted? Unfortunately, I’ve tried this, and I can tell you for a fact: it doesn’t work. This doesn’t mean you have to eat a perfectly clean diet – where’s the fun in that – but you do have to eat clean most of the time. I’ve found that you can actually enjoy eating a clean diet because you retrain your body to enjoy food which is actually healthy. I know it sounds crazy, but it’s true! Just do cardio Yes, aerobics are great for fat loss, but they’re not the be all and end all. Make sure you incorporate some of these tips if you want to boost fat loss when you do cardio. So now that I’ve covered some of the fitness myths you may have had, you may be wondering what you should be doing instead. Well stick around, because I’m about to tell you. Yes, this isn’t as fast as some people would like, but it’s the healthy option, plus you’re less likely to lose muscle along with the fat – which would be a bad thing, since muscle helps you burn fat. In other words, it’s not going to take 3 days, it could take weeks or more likely, months. And if you want visible abs, that’s a whole . First, there are the biological factors, namely: your genetics and sex. Women have to have higher body fat percentages than men to be healthy, this often means they can’t have visible abs showing and also be at a healthy, sustainable body- fat. Even so, due to genetics, some women do have visible abs at healthy body- fat percentages. You have to do the best you can with the genetics you have, not use them as an excuse. Same thing goes for guys, but they can get away with lower healthy body- fat percentages, hence the six- pack. The other issue with getting visible abs is it requires you to adhere to a clean diet a lot more strictly (again, depending on your genetics). So you can decide if it’s worth that extra commitment or not (and as long as you can keep a healthy body fat). The good news is regardless of your sex or genetics you can still get a sexy, toned stomach. So let’s talk about how to do that! Tips To Lose Belly Fat & Get A Sexy Stomach. There are really only 3 keys to getting a flat stomach: exercise, a clean & healthy diet and getting enough sleep. These are the 3 big ones, they form the foundation of losing belly fat and getting a sexy stomach. At the same time there are a lot of things you can do to compliment these and boost your fat loss, which I’ll include in a moment. First, let’s go into a little more detail on these 3 keys: Exercise You should aim to do at least 3. If you increase the duration and intensity of the exercise you’ll lose more fat, quicker. Combine cardio with strength training Most people turn to aerobic exercise for fat loss, but you will increase your fat loss substantially by combining cardiovascular exercise with strength training. This is because strength training builds muscle and muscle burns fat (i. Muscle also takes up less room than fat, so even though you may not lose weight! Not only that, it’s not enough to simply focus on ab exercises, you also want to do whole- body training especially using compound exercises like squats, deadlifts and shoulder presses. Eat clean & healthy “Abs are made in the kitchen. You can’t out- exercise a bad diet.” You’ve probably heard those before, and they simply illustrate how important a clean, healthy diet is to losing belly fat. The important thing is to commit to it and follow it consistently, to the best of your ability. It’s not about perfection, it’s about sticking to it as best you can and getting back on when you occasionally fall off. You could write an entire book on clean eating (and that’s been done) but I’ll give you the basic rules here, each day: Eat lean protein, complex carbohydrates and healthy fats. Looking at the list above, you may be a little bit daunted, but remember it’s more important to take small incremental steps which you can maintain, than trying to do everything at once and lasting a month. I’m talking from experience here: add a little bit at a time, maybe one or two items per week, get a good feel for it and then move onto the next items in the list. If I had to pick two to start with, I’d choose to up my vegetable intake substantially and cut way down on sodas and juices. Choose what works for you and don’t be afraid to experiment. A five- year study showed that adults who got less than 5 hours sleep a night accumulated significantly more visceral fat. So 6 – 8 hours seems like a good range. Family vacation at Worlds of Fun. First, I want to thank everyone for their support over the years I was making videos on You. Tube. Your support inspired me to do better videos and brighten my diet with new foods. I felt the encouragement every time I released a new video, ran a new marathon, or ran an Atkins boot camp. I was able to be published in multiple cookbooks, write for a low carb magazine Carbsmart, speak on multiple low carb podcasts, and more importantly become friends with many low carbers and watch many of your own weight loss journeys. It is for these friends that I wanted to write this missive to let you know how I am doing and where I have been. I know my final video had big plans for more videos being released, but a couple changes happened at my job. The specifics aren’t necessary, but the short answers I am often working evening hours and doing more travel than ever before. Combine this change with the recognition, I have 3 teenage children in high school. My life has gotten busier, and things have had to be prioritized. For example, I had to reduce my involvement in the fire department, my marathon training has nearly stopped, and of course the low carb videos have stopped. The evidence was pretty clear to all involved I was doing too much. Albeit the largest reason, busyness is not the only reason though. I would be lying if that was the only case. For the first time in the 1. I experienced a serious regain. If I was simply a blogger, it would not matter and I could continue to blog and perhaps ignore the regain while keeping my readers in the dark. However a video maker doesn’t have that freedom, and even looking at the comments of my last video, people are questioning a 2. I am even heavier now, and while not happy with it, my focus on family and job did succeed in those being successful. I do feel unworthy (edited: better word not credible) or ill- suited at the moment to make videos or even comment much about low carbing. I still absolutely follow the low carb diet with only a handful of days on a Christmas cruise where I was less than low carb. However, the question of the regain is there. Was it stress related as Lord knows I have prayed about that enough times? Was it taking long liberties away from exercising? Is my metabolism screwed up for years of low carbing or set wrong due to years of marathon running? Is it because I hit the 4- 0 birthday? The answer is probably more complex than I know, and really the only solution is to lose the weight again to figure out what will work this time. I have tried and attempted multiple different items with little success besides stemming the increasing tide of weight gains to periods of stagnation. I have tried journaling, lower carb, monitoring blood sugar, doing another Atkins boot camp, increasing my workouts to every single day, and even ran and paced a couple half and full marathons. The long term trajectory of my weight has been upwards. It has been frustrating to say the least. I would have loved a simple answer — drop 5g net carbs or run another mile — but it has not been so. In the past 2. 5 years of working for Microsoft, I have made my life and happiness more than simply about my weight though. I have enjoyed my life, and I do consider myself as blessed as ever. I do however know that I can’t remain this weight long term without health conditions returning – like the sleep apnea, the high blood pressure, lack of energy, etc. I have seen hints of what is to come (or return), and it is concerning. While I am still working out, I am no longer able to run for miles or even a mile at speeds more than a slog. Being considerably over my marathon weight has definitely made running not a lot of fun, and workouts are something I have to do instead of something I wanted to do. Since November of last year, I have been working out consistently even winning a contest with my daughter Tasha for most days worked out. These are not going out in the middle of winter at - 5. F and running 4 miles workouts though. Motivation has been external than largely internal. Fake it until you make it hasn’t worked so far. Where does that leave me? My life is still extremely good. I hate the extra weight I put on, and I know it can’t stay. My family of course remains my first priority and as an extension my job – being the main provider for them. I remain focused to continue to keep working out and putting the minutes in. I don’t have my answers yet, but like I said, I wanted to let you know where I am at right now. World Series 2. 01. If you don't like certain ingredients or are intolerant to some foods, here are options you can try: If you are dairy intolerant, try some of the paleo- friendly diet plans from this list. There is even a keto- friendly vegetarian diet plan for those who don't eat meat. Pork, lamb and fatty fish (salmon, mackerel, sardines) can be substituted with one another because they have a similar nutrition profile.
